In Memory: E. Garrett “Gar” Bewkes, III ’72, P’06

Dear Laurentian Community,

I write today with the sad news that E. Garrett “Gar” Bewkes, III ’72, P’06 has died. A Laurentian through and through, Gar was a devoted alumnus, proud parent, former member of the Board of Trustees (1992-2001), and the grandson of Eugene Bewkes, the University’s longest-serving president (1945-1963).

As a founder of GarMark Partners and a pioneer in leveraged finance, he played a transformative role in shaping the field, contributing to the growth of numerous businesses. His career also included leadership positions at Bear Stearns, Investcorp, and Manufacturers Hanover Trust. Gar was praised by his peers for his ability to tackle complex challenges with clarity and resolve.

Gar’s leadership extended beyond his professional achievements. He lent his expertise and wisdom to St. Lawrence’s Board of Trustees, demonstrating his commitment to strengthening the University’s future. This dedication mirrored his own grandfather’s legacy, fostering continuity and growth for our institution.

Childhood summers on his grandfather’s dairy farm in upstate New York sparked Gar’s lifelong love for the outdoors. An active hunter, fisherman, and scuba diver, he often entertained friends and family with colorful stories of his wild adventures. Gar was also an avid golfer all his life.

Gar is survived by his beloved wife, Jane; their three children, Chandler, Barrett, and E. Garrett IV; and four cherished grandchildren, Riley, Rory, Parker, and Saylor.

The contributions Gar made to St. Lawrence have had a lasting impact on our community. His memory will live on in the Laurentian spirit of resilience, adventure, and service.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 6, 2024, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien, Connecticut.

Please join us in celebrating Gar’s life by sharing your memories of him on the St. Lawrence University website. You can read the remembrances of others here.

Sincerely,

Kate Morris
