In Memory: John W. Priesing

Dear Laurentian community,

I write today to share the sad news that Trustee Emeritus John W. Priesing P’94 died on January 23 at the age of 95. A beloved trustee, devoted parent, and loyal supporter of St. Lawrence University, John’s long and purposeful life was marked by exemplary service, leadership, and generosity.

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1929, John graduated from Amherst College in 1950 and earned his MBA from Harvard Business School after serving honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. His distinguished business career spanned over three decades, culminating in his role as CEO of Axel Johnson Inc., from which he retired in 1989.

John’s retirement was as impactful as his professional life. He served on numerous boards, including St. Lawrence University’s Board of Trustees, where his thoughtful leadership and commitment to the University’s mission left an enduring impact. His contributions and steadfast advocacy for education and community development extended to institutions such as Westchester Community College, The Children’s Village, and Lawrence Hospital.

John’s love for athletics, particularly high school and college sports, reflected his boundless enthusiasm and support for young people. A familiar face at countless games, including St. Lawrence basketball, John’s unannounced appearances to cheer on his grandchildren and alma mater alike exemplified his warmth and dedication to family and community.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Madryn; his son, John W. Priesing Jr.’94; his daughter-in-law, Erin; and his beloved grandchildren, Mac (who has committed to join the incoming St. Lawrence Class of 2029) and Elle. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the enduring impact of his contributions to St. Lawrence and beyond.

Please join us in celebrating John’s life by sharing your memories of him on the St. Lawrence University website. You can read the remembrances of others here.

Sincerely,
Kate Morris
