Off-Campus Study for Psychology Major/Minor
Off-Campus Study Options of Special Interest to Psychology Majors
All of the SLU and SLU partner programs abroad are open to students from any major as long as they have a solid academic record and can show appropriate preparation (e.g., prerequisites). Some psychology majors use a semester off-campus to develop an academic interest other than psychology. We think some of the programs, however, may complement and extend the psychology major on campus in particularly good ways, and so we draw your attention to them. Typically, only one unit from an off-campus program may count toward meeting major requirements, but exceptions are courses taught abroad by SLU faculty (e.g., the regular summer offerings Neuroscience of Fear and London Spaces, UK Places). Please check out all of SLU’s programs in more detail on the CIIS website: CIIS Website. Please meet with your psychology advisor and go to the CIIS office in Carnegie to discuss your options.
Austria Language of instruction: English
The Vienna Program is spring only; one semester of college-level German or another course relevant to study in Austria is highly recommended. The city is intimately associated with the birth of psychology as a discipline. This program offers Psychology 216: Traditional Psychological Perspectives from Austria and their International Influence. The course covers a number of psychologists and will include field trips throughout the semester. All students will take German language on the program.
Czech Republic Language of instruction: English
The program in Prague run by CIEE is a partner program for St. Lawrence. Students interested in education may be interested in the Child Diversity and Development program: a theoretical course complemented with a practicum that allows hands-on training with children and supervised practice in Danish child care centers. In addition, study abroad in Denmark offers a wide variety of elective courses to complement your psychology major, which vary from year to year. The pre-requisite for the program is a European Studies course or a course with significant European content and a 3.0 GPA. Junior or Senior standing is required.
England Language of instruction: English
Psychology courses are only occasionally offered in the semester London Program, but the final month of the program is work placement (internship). Psychology majors on the London Program have worked in special education programs in schools, in counseling centers for sex/health/contraception, at the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, at a mental health day center, and at the London Sports Forum for Disabled People. In addition, the summer architectural psychology course, London Spaces, UK Places, taught by a SLU faculty member, counts as a regular departmental seminar.
Kenya Language of instruction: English
As with the London program, Psychology courses are only occasionally offered on the Kenya Semester, but the final 3-4 weeks of the program involve an independent project which can be tailored to a psychology major. Previous students have worked in refugee camps, in centers for homeless children, in AIDS children’s organizations, and in area hospitals.
Rome Language of instruction: English
Neuroscience of Fear (BIOL/PSYC/NRSCI 233), taught by SLU faculty in biology and/or psychology, is offered every summer in Rome. As a summer course, separate fees apply, and students must pay for their own transportation to Rome. This course counts as a non-laboratory elective for the psychology or neuroscience majors. Please see the course description for the pre-requisites.
Sweden Language of instruction: English
The Sweden program offers a more intimate academic experience than its sister program in Denmark, with just over 150 students enrolled each semester. Academic programs include a psychology-specific concentration, featuring positive psychology and forensic psychology. This program also offers concentrations in neuroscience, gender and sexuality studies, and public health. Like Denmark, there are a variety of elective courses to complement your psychology major, which vary from year to year. The pre-requisite for the program is a European Studies course or a course with significant European content and a 3.0 GPA. Junior or Senior standing is required.
