Dr. Alanna Gillis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology. She came to SLU after receiving her MA and PhD in Sociology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 2017 and 2020 respectively. She received her BA from Furman University in Greenville, SC. Her research focuses in inequality in higher education and inclusive pedagogy. She's especially interested in analyzing race, class, and gender inequality among college students. Her innovative teaching practices have won several national awards and are promoted by universities across the country, including at Yale University. She regularly teaches introduction to sociology, intro-level inequality, education and society, and sociology of family.
