Camilla Ammirati
I received my BA in English from Carleton College in Minnesota, and my PhD in English from the University of Virginia, where I focused on the relationship between domestic space and national belonging in late 19th- and early 20th-century American literature and music. After graduate school, I taught in St. Lawrence’s First-Year Program and then worked for several years as a folklorist and the Director of Research and Programs at TAUNY (Traditional Arts in Upstate New York) in downtown Canton, where I conducted research and developed programs and exhibits highlighting the living traditions of northern New York’s North Country. I returned to St. Lawrence in 2022 to teach in the First-Year Program again, and to be Faculty Co-Director and then Interim Director of the Sustainability Program, before joining Academic Advising in fall of 2024. My recent teaching and research focus has been on the intersections between folklife and sustainability as encountered through practices and knowledge around local and regional foodways and related experiences and expressions of conscious ecological kinship.
Along with work in folklore and higher education, I have been an active musician in the Boston bluegrass, Virginia old-time, and now Canton, NY old-time and country music communities, playing guitar and banjo as well as singing and writing music inspired by a range of American roots traditions.
As Assistant Director of Advising, Retention, and Student Success, I am glad to work with students on class and academic pathway planning, syllabus mapping, study and time management skills, how to communicate professionally with faculty and staff, and how to best connect with the incredible range of resources, opportunities, and activities St. Lawrence offers in order to enhance their college experience.
