I am a combinatorialist, which means I study discrete structures, often by counting how many states they have. A combinatorialist studying a Rubik’s cube might ask “what is the largest number of moves that are ever needed to unscramble this” or “how many different configurations does this have.” Most of my active research is in combinatorial tiling theory. I think this is a fun area to work in; every problem feels like a puzzle to play with, which is what drew me to math in the first place.
