Raymond Whalen

I currently live in the Adirondacks, surrounded by nature and family.

I find inspiration in the natural-world. Textures, patterns, random or ordered repetition as well as light and shadow are things I am drawn towards. I love the change of seasons, and all that each season brings in color, temperature lighting, smells, sounds and textures. My work is often varied as I explore different ways to capture what interests me.

In clay I have been exploring form and function, enjoying both controlled and loose form. I paint in watercolors, acrylics and oils. I enjoy printmaking, woodworking and found object constructions. Discarded materials are my inventory while everywhere I look I see compositions waiting to be manifested in some way. I am a K-12 Art educator as well as having been an adjunct professor at SUNY Canton, SUNY Potsdam and St. Lawrence University.

“Yesterday I thought I was clever, so I decided to change the world. Today I am wise, so I decided to change myself!” — Rumi
