Saints Riding Named Reserve Champs; Spring Sports Continue

The riding team is headed to the IHSA Nationals after being named the Reserve Champions at the IHSA Zone II Finals on Saturday. Following the show, St. Lawrence University President Kathryn Morris presented the Saints with the Reserve Champion trophy. The wins for the Scarlet and Brown continued with Saints Softball defeating Union (7-6, 6-3) after dominating Wells (21-0, 25-0) and SUNY Plattsburgh (11-4) while Saints Baseball secured wins over RIT (6-5) and SUNY Canton (11-7). Men’s lacrosse defeated Skidmore 22-4 after topping SUNY Plattsburgh 25-5 and women’s lacrosse defeated Skidmore 21-13, Union 16-12, and SUNY Canton 20-11 while women’s tennis beat William Smith 7-2. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Student Talent Takes the Stage

St. Lawrence student talent was on full display during University Theatre's recent production of  "30 Plays from Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind (30 Neo-Futurist Plays in 60 Minutes)!” Each performance featured 60 small plays performed in random order and incorporating audience interaction, ensuring no performance was ever exactly the same. Scholar-Athlete Classroom Wins!

This past week the Saints have been excelling beyond the soccer field. Grace Bridge ’24, Mia Cence ’25, Natalie Schock ’25, and Keely Snode ’24 from the women's soccer team have earned a place on the Academic All-District team, recognized by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). In the men's soccer division, Owen Lillis ’25 and Ben Woelfinger ’23 have also secured spots on the CSC Academic All-District team. These scholar-athletes hold a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.5, a sophomore academic standing or higher, and have actively contributed to at least 50% of the teams contests.

The Laurentian Network In Action!

During the mid-semester break, students explored possible career paths, peered into cutting-edge fields, and got to experience the nearby, vibrant city of Burlington, Vermont through SLU Connect Burlington!  Students engaged in expert panels that provided industry insights from aerospace manufacturing, athletic nutrition, non-profit, healthcare, and other sectors! They even got to step behind the scenes during company site tours of companies including Beta Technologies, UnTapped: All Natural Athletic Fuel, Hula, and Weird Window Brewing. A Weekend of Winning!

The Women's Soccer Team kicked off the weekend with a home game victory against Vassar College, winning 1-0. They continued their winning streak on Saturday, triumphing over Bard College with a score of 2-0. The Men's Soccer Team also secured a 5-0 victory against Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. To cap off the weekend, the Women's Hockey Team secured a 3-0 win against the University of Vermont

Partial Eclipse Over Campus

During the mid-semester break, St. Lawrence University Eclipse Center and students from the Society of Physics hosted a Partial Solar Eclipse Viewing on the Java Quad. During this extraordinary spectacle, the moon partially covers the sun's disk, resulting in temporary dimming of sunlight and brightness in its path. It was an afternoon of cosmic celebration, with telescopes, lawn games, music, and snacks, and of course, seeing the entire partial eclipse—they even identified a sunspot! COVID-19 Campus Update

Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a message to the community on Thursday, April 18  providing an update on testing numbers and sharing a reminder of current University COVID-19 guidelines. Read the message. 

Saints Dominate Spring Matchups

Saints men’s lacrosse defeated Vassarr 19-7 after beating Middlebury 18-11 in an on-the-road matchup that landed Mark Mahoney ’22 a number six spot on ESPN’s Sports Center Top 10 Sports Plays in April. Women’s lacrosse dominated RPI 17-3 to move into second place in the Liberty Leagues standings while women’s tennis secured a 7-2 win over RIT and men’s tennis beat Union 5-4. Softball defeated Clarkson 8-6 while several members of the men's and women's track and field teams secured top performances during the Upstate Alternative Meet in Cortland and the Smashing Saints Esports team ended their season in the Sweet 16 of the ECAC playoffs. For up-to-date schedules, news, and scores visit SaintsAthletics.com.

Making Every Minute Count, 1856 Challenge is a Success

In 1,856 minutes, over 2,000 donors helped transform our students’ passions into world-changing abilities. Thanks to the support of Laurentians around the globe, a generous $100,000 challenge gift towards student scholarship was unlocked and together, our community raised over $479,000 to empower student research, community engagement, career prep, and so many other experiences that make St. Lawrence such an incredible place to live and learn. Saints Earn Athletic and Academic Honors

Women’s Squash: First-year Eboni Atherley was named conference performer of the week and first-year Katherine Callaway earned rookie of the week after the Saints posted back-to-back 9–0 wins on Nov. 22 to move to 4–0.

Women’s Hockey: First-year Rylan Haslam scored twice, and the Saints put home three unanswered in the third to beat Boston College 4–2 on Saturday in Chestnut Hill and earn a weekend split.

Men’s Squash: First-year Emirhan Sen went 3–0 at the top spot and earned Liberty League Performer of the Week honors as the Saints split their pre-Thanksgiving matches.

Men’s Soccer: Juniors Dennis Argueta, Baker Diaz, and Nicholas Petrone were named CSC Academic All-District for maintaining at least a 3.50 GPA, holding sophomore standing or higher, and contributing in at least half of the team’s games.

Women’s Soccer: Junior Chloe Bourque, senior Kylie Burnett, junior Zoe Davenport, senior Meredith Donahue, and senior Madison King-Thurber earned CSC Academic All-District honors. Donahue advanced as an Academic All-America finalist, with national selections announced Dec. 17.

"The Best Decision I Ever Made"

As Matthew Shelton '26 prepares to graduate this Spring, he reflects on his time at St. Lawrence, and how he couldn't imagine choosing to spend his college-years anywhere else. From on-campus internships to adventures in Bangkok, Stockholm, and London, to his home-away-from-home at Commons College, Matthew thinks choosing St. Lawrence was the best decision he ever made. On December 1, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Board Chair Emeritus and Trustee Emeritus Edgar Byron Wilson ’53. "Ed," or "E.B.," served two years in the Army and built a distinguished career in consumer goods marketing, rising to CEO roles that took him and his family across the globe. Ed was also a passionate supporter of the arts and higher-education, a devoted sports fan, and an avid reader. Read the full message here. 

On November 20, President Morris informed the Laurentian community about the passing of Kirk Fuoss, associate professor emeritus of performance and communication arts. A gifted teacher and dedicated mentor, Kirk was widely regarded as a “teacher’s teacher.” Kirk was also an avid traveler, Broadway enthusiast, and devoted animal lover. He also enjoyed gardening, alpine skiing, tennis, and cooking elaborate meals with loved ones. Read the full message here. 

Saints Dominate Competition, Shatter Records

• Men’s Lacrosse: The No. 20 Saints secured a 9-6 win over No. 5 RPI to solidify a home playoff game. Senior Bobby Wells scored his 100^th career point in the contest, and senior Michael Marinello had a career-high in saves with 21.
• Track and Field: Junior Nick Lyndaker had a personal best and broke the program record in the 1500-meter run, with a time of 3:42.75, four seconds ahead of the previous record holder’s time set by Dave Elster in 1984. This time is also a facility record, placing him second in the NCAA Division III performance list and ninth all-time in the 1500-meter. Both the men's and women's teams took first overall in the SLU Twilight Invite.
• Baseball: The team notched a 3-1 win over VTUS Castleton this past Tuesday. Sophomore Matt Davis and junior John Gannon each had an RBI, while Gannon and Davis were joined by senior Timothy Connor, graduate student Brett Federico, and first-year Eddie Morrissey in recording a hit on the day.
• Softball: In a doubleheader against Skidmore, Saints Softball defeated Skidmore 21-8, scoring a season-high 21 runs in game two. This is the most runs the team has put up since they plated 25 runs against Wells College in 2022.
• Women’s Tennis: With its 5-2 win over William Smith, Saints Women's Tennis tied its program record for wins in a season with 16. They now enter the postseason, where they will play Union College at Cornell in the Liberty League tournament starting this Friday.
• Women’s Lacrosse: St. Lawrence bested Clarkson 12-6 in the Route 11 rivalry last Tuesday. Both first-year Cate Rathnam and first-year Lily Stanton recorded their first career hat tricks in the win. The Saints faced RIT yesterday in the first round of the Liberty League tournament and had their season end with an overtime loss.

Saints Shut Out the Competition, Fall Sports Continue

The scarlet and brown shut out the competition as Saints volleyball topped Potsdam 3-0 with a marathon 62-point second set and Saints men's soccer defeated Ithaca 1-0 last week. Wearing Masks on Campus

On Friday, April 22 Academic Affairs and Student Life sent a message to the community recommending wearing face masks in all public indoor spaces in light of the increase in COVID cases in our region. Read the Message. 

Saints Secure First Place Finishes; Spring Sports Continue

The Saints track and field teams secured several first-place wins at the Cortland Classic over the weekend. Lambert ’22 won the decathlon while Mike Skutt ’24 won the 10k to lead the men’s track and field team and Oliva Watson ’23 won the 5k while Olivia Bernier ’24 won the 10k to lead the women’s team. The wins continued with Saints Softball defeating RIT 6-4 on the road after dominating SUNY Potsdam 10-2 and 7-3 while baseball secured a 13-6 win over Clarkson in a Route 11matchup. Men’s lacrosse defeated RPI 11-7 after beating Clarkson 17-6 while women’s lacrosse dominated Vassar 16-8 after topping Clarkson 18-16. Saints Football’s Kyle Frimel ’22 was selected as a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and several members of the football team were named to the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, recognizing student-athlete academic excellence. Scarlet, Brown, and Green for Sustainability

Last weekend St. Lawrence hosted the North Country Sustainability Day and Green Living Fair in collaboration with The Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley, Paul Smith’s College, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, the municipalities of Canton and Potsdam, and the Local Living Venture. The event, which aimed to inspire and empower attendees to fostering a culture of sustainability across the North Country and beyond, combined gallery exhibits with discussions and welcomed author of  the book"Braiding Sweetgrass" Robin Wall-Kimmerer as the keynote speaker.  View photos from the event on the St. Lawrence Instagram account.

Saints Hit a Winning Streak and Secure First Place Victories

Field Hockey—Junior Caroline Hamilton scored two goals, including a dramatic go-ahead goal in the dying seconds of the game, and senior Cara Vredenburg made 16 saves as field hockey earned a conference victory in the Liberty League opener, 2-1 over Skidmore. The win is St. Lawrence’s third straight victory.

Men’s Rowing—The 2024-25 fall portion of the schedule opened at the Mohawk Fall Classic Regatta in Scotia, N.Y. on Sunday. With five boats in the men's 2V race, St. Lawrence's 'B' boat with first-year Luke Rucolas and senior Sam Sternhagen placed first with a time of 15:00.62.

Women’s Rowing—The 2024-25 fall portion of the schedule opened at the Mohawk Fall Classic Regatta in Scotia, N.Y. on Sunday. The Saints 'A' Varsity 8 rowed to a first-place finish, recording a time of 15:29. 67.

Women’s Hockey—Three different Saints scored, including a first-career goal for first-year Alexia Côté, as eighth-ranked women's hockey opened the 2024-25 season with a 3-0 win over Merrimack in a Friday morning game at Lawler Rink. St. Lawrence moved to 1-0-0 on the season, while Merrimack fell to 0-1-0. Côté took ECAC Hockey Bitcoin Rookie of the Week honors for the performance. 

Men’s Tennis—Senior Edvin Strandberg was the lone Saint to represent men’s tennis at the ITA Northeast Regionals on the campus of Drew University, and advanced to the Round of 16 yesterday with a pair of wins. This morning, Strandberg went to a tiebreak in the opening game losing 6-7 (3) and fell 0-6 in the final game to end his run. The team will be back in action in February.

Math and Everything at St. Lawrence

Last Friday’s Math and Everything event brought together 250 young women from North Country high schools, along with students, faculty, and alumni, for a day of learning and exploration. From career panels to interactive sessions on AI, neuroscience, and more, there was so much to explore.
