Dr. Brezault presented a paper at the MLA annual conference
On January 8th 2021, Eloise Brezault has presented a paper online at the Modern Language Association annual conference. Her paper was entitled: “Ecology, Femininity and Stigma: heterotopic bodies in The Prophecy by visual artist Fabrice Monteiro.” In his work, Monteiro, an artist from Belgium and Benin, raises public awareness of global warming while claiming a particular aesthetic of femininity. These images represent creatures at once beautiful, dangerous and monstrous, covered with all kinds of waste, in apocalyptic landscapes ravaged by ecological disasters. Beyond the very committed environmental message that these photos offer, Prof. Brezault’s paper reflected on the image of the body of these supernatural women that is offered in Monteiro’s stunning work. The Guardian presented Monteiro’s work here.
