Students from St. Lawrence's New York City Semester Program, directed by Dr. Mert Kartal, engaged in discussions with diplomats at the Permanent Missions of Germany and Ireland to the United Nations.
On October 11th, 2024, 16 students from St. Lawrence’s New York City Semester Program, directed by Dr. Mert Kartal (Associate Professor of Political Science), visited the Permanent Missions of Ireland and Germany to the United Nations (UN), where they participated in discussions with diplomats and policy experts shaping international affairs.
At the Permanent Mission of Ireland, the group was welcomed by a distinguished panel that included Ambassador Dónal Cronin (Deputy Permanent Representative), Colonel Mark Hearns (Military Adviser), Iseult McNulty (Third Committee Adviser), Isabella Van Hooff (Fifth Committee Adviser), Alfredo Tinao Garcia (Sixth Committee Adviser), and Aisling McDonagh (Communications Adviser). The panelists shared valuable insights on key issues such as international humanitarian law and genocide prevention.
The students also visited the Permanent Mission of Germany, where they engaged in a lively conversation led by Press Officer Hannah Maes on the role of the United Nations and Germany in tackling global challenges.
These experiences are a vital part of the NYC Semester Program, which enables St. Lawrence University students to explore career paths and broaden their global perspectives while living and studying in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
