Taming Trash: Students Learn About Waste Management
This semester, students in the Taming Trash course, taught by Dr. Lori Clark and cross-listed under Environmental Studies (ENVS) and Public Health (PH), explored waste management through hands-on experiences. The class visited the St. Lawrence University compost site, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Anaerobic Digester, and the Development Authority of the North Country (DANC) Materials Management Facility.
On October 30, the class toured the DANC facility and met with a waste research team from Stony Brook University. The team is working on a NYDEC-funded project to study waste at landfills across New York State.
Senior Sam Voter, as part of their Senior Year Experience (SYE) project, worked with John Culpeper of Compost for Good to analyze the SLU campus compost. Sam’s project focuses on improving food waste and composting practices on campus and in the region.
Starting in January, Dana Dining will make big changes to reduce waste, including collecting post-consumer food waste for composting, eliminating most disposable items, and introducing smaller plates. A student-led food separation station is also being planned.
