You’ll find young Laurentians competing in the Olympic games. But did you know they’re also coaching at all levels, working in management at the professional level, or using sports to engage underserved communities and expand the love of sports to new audiences?
Assistant Director, Hockey Analytics at Philadelphia Flyers
Jacob Hurlbut ’15 | Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
As a member of the Saints men’s hockey team staff, a computer science major with a history minor, and with a student research focus in sports analytics, it was a seamless transition for Jacob Hurlbut ’15 to start his own sports analytics consultancy following graduation in 2015. It didn’t take long for the Philadelphia Flyers organization to hire Hurlbut full time for their data analytics team in 2016. Most recently, Hurlbut was promoted to assistant director of Hockey Analytics for the Philadelphia Flyers. In his six years with the Flyers, he has built a comprehensive data warehouse that unifies all information used across the Hockey Operations department. His analysis of individual players and teams at all levels of organized hockey helps inform all decisions related to drafting, roster construction, player acquisition, salary cap, and on-ice strategy.
Program Director, Harlem Lacrosse
Greta Massey ’18 Boston, Massachusetts
Since graduating in 2018, Greta Massey, a performance and communication arts major and former captain of the Saints women’s lacrosse team, has worked with Harlem Lacrosse. The organization is a school-based nonprofit dedicated to academic support, mentoring, leadership training, college readiness career exploration, admissions counseling, and lacrosse instruction. Most recently, in her role as program director for the Boston chapter, Massey maintained a daily presence in area schools and students’ lives, helping to build their confidence and reach their full personal potential. There are even a few Harlem Lacrosse program alumni who made their way to St. Lawrence for their undergraduate careers. Massey’s experience working with young people who are learning a new sport will be an asset as she takes on a new job as a ski instructor for Park City Mountain, in Park City, Utah.
