Geoff Falen, Director of Career Connections
Hello! I’m Geoff Falen, Director of Career Connections, and I am pleased to be an ally to first generation college students. By academic background and training, I’m a language and history nerd (BA in German/History, MA in European History). By profession and experience, I’m a higher education guide, having based my career on providing students the kind of guidance that I wanted and often didn’t get when I was in college. Some of that was because the advice was bad or incomplete, and some of it was because I didn’t know whom (or how) to ask.
Although I’m not a first generation graduate myself, I have helped many first generation students dealing with questions and issues such as:
- What should I major in? What can I do with that major after graduation? What if I want to do something that’s NOT related to my major after graduation?
- How do I navigate college/get the most of out of my academic, co-curricular, and other experiences?
- How (or why) should I do X [get an internship], [study abroad], [talk to alumni]?
- What are the resources available to me and how do I access them?
- What is important to me in the life I lead after college?
If, like me back in college, you aren’t sure about your path or whom to ask, maybe some of the questions above will serve as a starting point to a conversation about your time at St. Lawrence. Bottom line: if you know what you want, come talk to me to learn more about what you need and how best to go after it. If you don’t know what you want, come talk to me anyway, and we’ll figure it out together. I look forward to speaking with you!
