Learning Goals

After completing a minor in African American Studies, students should be able to:

• Demonstrate substantive knowledge of the contributions of African Americans to United States history, politics, culture, and society.
• Demonstrate substantive knowledge of the struggles for social, political, economic, and cultural empowerment of African-Americans and African descended peoples globally.
• Critically engage and evaluate information and arguments from an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and cross-cultural perspective to better understand the varied histories and experiences of African Americans and peoples of the African diaspora.
• Understand how race and ethnicity intersect with other social identities such as gender, class, sexuality, spirituality, age, and ability and how these factors influence the lives of individuals and communities of the African diaspora in the United States and globally.
