SLU & University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine Articulation Agreement

St. Lawrence University (SLU) and the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNE-COM) have established an agreement to promote admission of SLU graduates to UNE-COM's Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) medical school.  This agreement guarantees that students who have met the criteria below will receive an interview invitation from UNE-COM.  This preferential consideration is an invaluable opportunity for SLU students to advance toward their goal of becoming a physician.

To be eligible, students must:

  1.  Successfully complete the UNE-COM prerequisite coursework listed below, with a grade of 3.0 or better*:
  • General Biology I and II with Labs
  • General Chemistry I and II with Labs
  • Organic Chemistry I with Lab (one semester only)
  • Biochemistry (one semester, no lab)
  • College or University Physics I and II with Labs
  • English/Humanities, 2 courses   (Please contact Dr. Kari Heckman or Dr. Jane Kring for a listing of possible subjects to complete this requirement.)

2. Earn a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA in their undergraduate coursework and a 2.8 average science prerequisite coursework GPA as calculated by AACOMAS (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine).

3. Complete the MCAT (medical school entrance exam), no later than July of the year of application with official scores received in the University’s Office of Graduate Admissions by September 1.

4. Complete and document a minimum of 40 hours of direct patient care, experience, exposure and/or observations at time of application.  (This includes shadowing experience.)

5. Maintain good standing at SLU, satisfy all program academic and technical standards, and pass a criminal background check prior to UNE-COM matriculation.

*Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) test credit will be accepted towards all prerequisite requirements. No other test credits will be accepted. To use test credits for a prerequisite requirement, it must be listed on the undergraduate transcript, separately by subject, or a breakdown must be provided by the undergraduate institution.

How to pursue this opportunity

  • Students interested in this opportunity should meet with Pre-Health Program Co-Chairs Dr. Kari Heckman and Dr. Jane Kring to plan how they will complete the pre-requisite courses and plan for their application to UNE-COM.  Meeting as a first-year or sophomore student will provide students the most support and guidance to be a successful applicant.
  • Students must complete a St. Lawrence University Health Careers Committee Interview.  This interview should be held during their junior spring semester (or junior fall semester if studying abroad during junior spring).
  • Students should complete an AACOMAS medical school application by August 1.  (This would be late summer between junior and senior years.)  This application will include the recommendation letter prepared by SLU's Health Careers Committee following the student's interview.
  • The SLU Health Careers Committee will submit names of students eligible for the agreement to UNE-COM by August 1 of the year the student applies.  Students must clearly communicate with the Health Careers Committee their intent to apply to UNE-COM well before this deadline.
  • UNE-COM will invite students for an interview by December 15.  Admission is not guaranteed, and UNE-COM will communicate their decision within 4-8 weeks of the interview.
