Commencement 2021 Recap

A total of 465 degrees were awarded on April 18, 2021. There were 450 candidates for bachelor’s degrees, including 273 for Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and 177 Bachelor of Science (B.S.), and of which 21 are candidates for summa cum laude (highest honors). There were 9 candidates for Master of Education (M.Ed.) degrees, and 6 candidates for Master of Arts (M.A.) degrees.

The five most popular majors this year are, in descending order:

  • Business in the Liberal Arts
  • Economics
  • Psychology
  • Government
  • Performance and Communication Arts

The senior class member with the highest cumulative grade-point average (GPA) was Rachel Anna Loyst of Long Island, N.Y. Her GPA is 3.971 out of a possible 4.0. She majored in neuroscience and minored in public health. 

The 2021 Joan Donovan Speech Contest winner was Hamidou Sylla (Bronx, New York)who earned the opportunity to speak to graduates at Commencement.

The Jeffery H. Boyd Class of ’78 Prize, an award that was established by the Board of Trustees in 2018 and recognizes the overall contributions exemplifying leadership on campus made during the college career of a graduating senior, was awarded by President Fox to Grace Harkins (Kansas City, Missouri).

A degree was awarded posthumously to Margaret A. Blackmon.

Degrees Presented by Family Members 

It is a tradition at St. Lawrence for graduates to have the option of receiving their degree from family members associated with the University. The following candidates received degrees from relatives:

  • Mirna Husinec, presented by her parent, Professor of Geology Antun Husinec
  • Alyssa Sloan, presented by her parent, Security Officer Todd Sloan
  • Sage Richards, presented by his parent, Associate Registrar Deborah Richards
