Mission: According to its website: The Unitarian Universalist Church of Canton was founded in 1825 as a Universalist congregation. Our 200-member congregation is organized democratically, and membership is open to all. The congregation, by majority vote, chooses its own ministers and has final authority over all aspects of church life. Ours is a diverse and inclusive religious community, welcoming the full participation of all without regard to race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or physical challenge. Our mission: "Creating a welcoming, compassionate faith community, committed to social justice and open to wonder." Together we strive to: Foster a spirit of inclusion and connection, Encourage exploration of truth and meaning, Nurture respect for all life and the environment, Live our values in the North Country and in the wider world".
Projects:
- Phone Banking: In these times, making phone calls to people in the North Country who are interested in the Poor People’s Campaign is one of the best ways to grow our work. The North Country Poor People’s Campaign covers several counties and has a contact list of over 300 people. Help connect poor and disenfranchised folks in the North Country to our values and update them on upcoming events and actions. A full script is provided.
- Housing & Healthcare Advocacy: Support our leadership committee by researching local, state, and federal legislation that would help the poor and disenfranchised have access to stable housing and healthcare options in the North Country. Present your research to our leadership committee and/or during one of our monthly public meetings on Zoom. Our meetings always take place on Tuesday evenings at 6pm.
