Finance Major

A major in finance at St. Lawrence will consist of 12-12.5 units. Below outlines the minimum requirements for a finance major; requirements and course numbers may change as this major is developed. Students matriculating as first year students starting in the fall of 2020 may declare the finance major.

Students may not double major in finance and economics, and students majoring in finance may not minor in economics.

ECON 251 Intermediate Microeconomic Theory (1 unit)
ECON 252 Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory (1 unit)
FIN 313 Investments (formerly ECON 313) (1 unit)
FIN 312 Corporate Finance (1 unit)
ACC 203 Financial Accounting (1 unit)
ACC 204 Managerial Accounting (1 unit)
At least two electives in FIN at the 300 or 400 level (or ECON 311 or ECON 361) (2 units)
At least two additional electives in ECON or FIN (or GOVT 316) one of which may be at the 200 level. (2 units)

*This course may be omitted with advanced placement credit or other advanced standing.

**STAT 113 is a prerequisite for ECON 200

In addition to maintaining a 2.0 university-wide cumulative average, students majoring in finance must maintain a 2.0 cumulative average on all finance, economics, and accounting courses taken and must earn at least a 2.0 in Economics 251 and Economics 252. Economics 251 and 252 must be taken at St. Lawrence before the end of the junior year.

Students are encouraged to complete either an internship, community-based learning experience, abroad experience, or senior year independent research in support of their major.

How to declare this major:

  1. QUALIFY. You must have a 2.0 GPA overall in economics, finance, and accounting courses as well as have a 2.0 or higher in Economics 251 and 252 if either course has been taken.
  2. APPROVAL. You will need meet with an economics faculty member and have their approval as your Finance Advisor.
  3. TRANSCRIPT. Download a copy of your unofficial transcript from APR 2.0. You will need to upload it as part of the major declaration form (Step 5). 
  4. CONTRACT. Complete the online contract Finance Major Contract.
  5. MAJOR DECLARATION FORM. This online form must be completed through the Slate system from advising: https://www.stlawu.edu/advising/forms  Please upload the unofficial copy of your transcript as you complete the major declaration form.
