The study of economics begins with an understanding of the market economy — how it works, its advantages, its limitations. This leads to investigation of topics in international economics, public finance, monetary economics and economic history, as well as study of the problems of environmental degradation, poverty, inflation and unemployment. The St. Lawrence program introduces you to the traditional core of economic theory, provides knowledge about economic institutions, and emphasizes the application of economic analysis to current issues. You can learn more about the economics faculty.

If you think you might be interested in majoring in economics, you should take ECON 100: Introduction to Economics (SS) either semester during your first year. It is an introductory survey of economics, including both macroeconomics and microeconomics. It is also well suited for those students who are not intending to major in economics but would like a broad exposure to the discipline.

Credit for ECON 100 will be granted to students who earn a grade of 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations in Microeconomics or Macroeconomics.

Potential economics majors should enroll in STAT 113: Applied Statistics (QLR) as a prerequisite to ECON 200: Quantitative Methods. In addition, although calculus is not required for the major in economics, we recommend that potential economics majors take MATH 135: Calculus I (QLR).

The following course this fall is appropriate for first-year students, subject to the availability of seats:
