Career Success
As an English (or Humanities) major, you will be prepared to enter a wide-range of career families. The skills you develop as an English major will make you a successful employee.
Study after study reveals that English majors possess all of the skills employers seek: we fair better than sciences, for example, in income and finding jobs right out of college.
In this section of the website, you and your parents will find information about the pursuits of English majors in their careers: in first few years after graduating and in the long-term.
In another section you will find explicit instructions on how to find a job as a humanities major. Unlike other pre-professional fields that can hire ten graduates from the same major, rarely do firms hire 10 English majors in one year. There are exceptions such as large media firms.
The career guide is meant for students wanting to pursue traditional careers such as working for corporations, non-profits, and start-ups. For students who want to publish their creative writing, you'll most likely need to attend an MFA program. At that program they will have courses in how to publish your work as well as publishers who visit your program seeking out new works. Ask your creative writing professors for specifics on applying to graduate school.
Finally, another section contains a number of research studies and surveys outlining why English majors are indeed "successful" in making money, earning prestigious titles, and advancing up the corporate ladder.
