Michael is originally from Germany and Croatia and has been teaching in the Politics Department and International Studies Program at SUNY Potsdam for much of his two decades in the North Country. He was a full-time faculty member in the Government Department at St. Lawrence University from 2006 to 2011 and has been teaching some courses for the department since then. Michael is now the Chair of the Department of Politics and Coordinator for International Studies at SUNY Potsdam.  

In his research, he focuses on the intersections of the international political economy, international migration, and most recently global climate change effects. He regularly teaches Introduction to International Relations, International Conflict, International Political Economy, International Migrants and Refugees, International Relations Theory, and a political economy class titled European Union. Among other teaching awards, he received SUNY Potsdam’s President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2022. 

Michael is also a trained dialogue facilitator with significant experience facilitating cross-cultural and anti-racism dialogues. In 2018, he was awarded Soliya’s inaugural Community Advocacy Award for his efforts in educating global citizens and facilitating cross-cultural dialogue and understanding.
