Shane Hauck ’23 is finalist in the National Football League ’s (NFL’s) 2024 data analysis competition, the Big Data Bowl. This year’s competition focused on tackling. Hauck and his team wrote an analysis of NFL tackling entitled “No Edge, No Chance: The Impact of Setting the Edge on Zone Run Plays.” The annual Big Data Bowl is a data analysis competition meant to generate innovative statistical methods in football. “Contestants in each year’s Big Data Bowl compete for prizes ranging from game tickets to cash, including a $100,000 prize for the competition.” Hauck and team are finalists in the Coaching track. They are one of five teams of finalists that will present their work to judges and NFL teams at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, IN on February 28th.
On February 2, 2024 four new student members were inducted into the Mu Sigma Rho Statistics Honorary Society.
Several St. Lawrence University (SLU) faculty presented at the 2023 Joint Statistical Meeting in Toronto. The Joint Statistical Meeting is the largest gathering of statisticians in North America. Three SLU faculty gave presentations.
This past week, the "Arab Society through Graphic Novels and Films" class had the privilege of having Nikolai Ruskin, a multi-instrumentalist and expert in Middle Eastern instruments, as a guest speaker.
The talk entitled “Statistical Methods for Testing Equity of False Non Match Rates across Multiple Demographic Groups” discussed statistical methods for comparing whether or not differences between demographic groups, e.g. ethnic groups or age groups in their ability to access a biometrically based device were statistically discernible.
Patti Frazer Lock recently returned from giving three presentations at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Francisco.
Prof Brezault recently published an article in French for the academic journal, French Studies in Southern Africa about Fabrice Monteiro's photographic series, The Prophecy (2014). It is entitled: “Écologie et féminité dans La Prophétie de Fabrice Monteiro : les corps comme lieux afrotopiques pour repenser des territoires-monde.”
