New York City Summer Semester Program 2021

May 3 – August 15, 2021, 15 weeks; 4 SLU Units. Application deadline: November 2

Open to all majors. First Year students requiring a First Year seminar are not eligible to apply.

Students will have the opportunity to study and intern for the whole summer in one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the world. Students will be given assistance with internship contacts, research techniques, resume reviews, interview workshops and individual mock interviews. SLU has a diverse network of organizations interested in interviewing NYC Semester students for internships. A list of past program internship sites can be found here. Students must remain in NYC until August for completion of internship. 

COURSES

May 3- June 4. Five weeks. Students will take one unit remotely from the following electives:

  • ECON Financial Economics in New York City. Pre-requisite ECON 100 (1 unit).This course introduces you to investing or constructing a portfolio of assets in order to meet specific financial goals.  We will first cover the investment process and fundamental concepts such as the time value of money and the measurement of risk.  This section of the course will also discuss taxation, financial planning, and efficient markets.  In the second section, we will discuss investment companies such as mutual funds, ETFs, and REITs.  The third section is devoted to stocks, the fourth covers bonds and the last section ends with a discussion of derivatives.  Throughout the class, you will develop the skills to solve time value of money problems and to measure risk through the analysis of financial statements. Emphasis will be placed on real world applications and connections to NYC, as the knowledge obtained will be helpful beyond the course itself. The aim is to provide tools that will help students make more informed financial decisions, in both professional and personal contexts and to help prepare you for your internships in NYC.
  • AAH  Urban Story Telling: Exploring Photography within New York. No pre-requisite (1 unit). This course will focus on the basics of photography, how to use a digital SLR, composition, and how to professionally edit photographs while focusing on the genre of street photography. There will be an emphasis on photographers that established our perception of New York City and it’s history such as Alfred Stiegliz, Berenice Abbot, Alfred Eisenstedt, Weegee, Diane Arbus, Elliot Erwitt, Garry Winogrand, Helen Levitt, Nan Goldin, William Klein, and Gordon Parks.

Students will arrive in NYC by June 6 and not earlier than June 1.

June 7- 18. All students will take the following course in New York City:

The Capital of Capital: New York City from Alexander Hamilton to the present (1 unit). In Alexander Hamilton (2005), the biographer Chernow writes that “as New York City went, so went the state, and possibly the nation.” Through Hamilton’s support of the Bank of New York in 1784 to the 2008 financial collapse, the ebbs and flow of financial capital in New York City have had direct impacts on human and political capital all over the world.  This course takes an experiential learning approach to examining the diversity and complexity of New York City through the lens of financial capital. The class will be composed of modules on the historical interplay between America’s economic center and politics, immigration, religion, education, and popular culture with an objective to meet the DIV13 learning goals.  Students will also explore the cultures of the city and will discover The New York City brand. Students will participate in cultural events as a way to understand the city as a cultural space and how it defines itself to its inhabitants and promotes itself to its many visitors.

Students live in single rooms or a single-sex double room at the 92YResidence, (92nd Street and Lexington, 1395 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10128) which houses students and interns throughout the year. Students will be provided with a meal stipend to cover all meals while on the program. Cooking facilities are available on each floor at the 92YResidence. Other amenities include laundry rooms located throughout the residence, 24-hour security and free Wi-Fi with full use of all the 92Y facilities.

The 92Y is located in the historic Carnegie Hill section of Manhattan's Upper East Side and is just three blocks from Central Park and Museum Mile.  The 92nd Street Y is one of New York's finest cultural and community centers with weekly events including concerts, lectures, art, music, dance, and language classes. SLU students get discounted entrance rates at lectures & events. Located in a residential area, there are numerous groceries, delicatessens, restaurants and other services in the immediate neighborhood. The facility includes a Health, Fitness & Sports Center, featuring a 75-foot swimming pool, gym, aerobics classes, steam room, and sauna.
