Advice for First-Year Students
The history department encourages first-year students to take courses at the 100 and 200 levels. A course’s level does not represent its degree of difficulty, but the depth and breadth of the class’s focus. 100-level courses are broad surveys of the history of particular regions of the world, while 200-level courses are more focused temporally, geographically, and/or thematically. Note that 3000-level courses are 100- or 200-level special topics courses (courses not offered regularly), so are also entirely appropriate for first-year students.
First-year students may not take History 299, a sophomore and junior research methods seminar designed for history majors and minors.
If you have any questions, whether about the appropriateness of a particular course or the history major or minor, feel free to contact the department chair, Dr. Howard Eissenstat.
