Writing A Thank You Note

Envelope with Thank You on it

It is important to make sure the letter is free of both grammatical and spelling errors. You are an important part of St. Lawrence University, and the literacy demonstrated in your letter is a reflection on all of us. Sending a thank you letter confirms that this scholarship was important enough to you to take the time to present yourself in a professional manner.

You can write your letter in Microsoft Word and upload it to the form link below, or write your letter directly into the form link below.

Suggested Letter Content

  • Thank the donor for their generosity in providing the scholarship and how it will make a difference in your education.
  • When the University selects the recipient on the donor's behalf, the donor doesn't know much, if anything, about you. Include some information so the donor can get to know you personally.
  • Include some information about your time at St. Lawrence, both on- and off-campus, academically and professionally.
  • What is the impact that the scholarship/grant/aid has had for you or even your family?

Thank You Letter Tips:

  • Write clearly and concisely.
  • Double-check your letter for typographical and grammatical errors—better yet, ask a friend to review it.
  • Express enthusiasm.
  • Be sincere.
  • Do not ask for additional funding.
  • Letters do not have to be essays – they just have to be sincere!.

When writing your letter, be aware that not all letters go to financial donors. A benefactor or supporter may not be the individual(s) who provided the funding, but could be the fund honorary or a foundation contact, for example. We recommend that you do not thank them for their "gift," "giving," or “donation” to St. Lawrence.  Use inclusive language such as “thank you for your support.” You can also begin your letters with something like “I am honored to be the recipient of...” or “Thank you for your support of the....” or “Dear St. Lawrence Supporter.”

*NOTE: The University does not share donor information with students. We also do not share recipient contact information with our donors unless you offer the information first or we reach out to you on the donor’s behalf. We have had many strong relationships form in the past when donors and recipients decided to stay in contact with each other!
