Backpacking Trip Equipment List
What to pack in: An internal or external frame pack that has enough volume to hold all of your belongings as well as some group gear and food (approx: 4500 - 6000 in3).
Essential Gear
Clothes
- 1 tee-shirt
- 1 pair hiking shorts
- 1 pair lightweight pants; no jeans (they get wet and cold!)
- 1 wool or synthetic pile sweaters or jackets
- 1 set (top & bottom) synthetic long underwear, (ex: polypro or capilene, no cotton!)
- 1 jacket (ex: down puffy coat, no cotton)
- 1 thick & warm wool or synthetic fleece hat
- 1 pair thick & warm wool mittens or gloves
- Underwear
- 2 pairs wool socks
- rain gear: rain jacket & pants (no ponchos please)
- hat for sun protection
- sunglasses
Gear
- sleeping bag 30°F (pack this inside a tough garbage bag inside its regular stuff sack to help ensure dryness)
- sleeping pad (closed-cell pads or Therma-Rests® please, open-cell foam pads act like sponges)
- sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support (they must fit properly and be broken in prior to the trip)
- 1 of each: cup, bowl, spoon (no glass)
- pocket knife
- Flashlight/headlamp and extra batteries
- 1-2 32oz water bottles (no glass)
- a few extra garbage bags
- toilet kit: its contents should be those things that you cannot live without (toothbrush, toothpaste, tampons, biodegradable soap…etc)
- journal and pen/pencil
- sunscreen
Optional Gear
- camp shoes (ex: sandals, crocs, sneakers)
- camera (the OP loves copies of good photos)
- synthetic sock liners
- gloves/liners for mitts
- scarf/neck gator
- chapstick
- Favorite Poem or prose (keep it light!)
Canoe Packing List

- 1+ sets (top & bottom) synthetic/wool long underwear, such as polypropylene, capilene or smartwool. Any types containing cotton are not acceptable.
- 1 synthetic tee-shirt
- 1 pair water shorts
- 1 wool or synthetic pile sweaters
- Bathing suit
- Synthetic underwear
- 1 pair lightweight synthetic pants for bug/sun protection (this is optional, you can use your raingear instead)
- 1 pair fleece/wool pants
- rain jacket & pants (no ponchos!)
- 1 pair of camp shoes. These may be tevas or other sandals, crocs, hiking boots, sneakers, but remember you want your feet to be warm.
- 2 pairs wool socks
- 1 pair wool mittens or gloves
- 1 warm, wool or synthetic fleece hats
- 1 hat for sun & bug protection
