TIPS Monitor Responsibilities
TIPS Monitors - What are you responsible for at an event?
When you are a TIPS monitor working an event you are responsible for ensuring that the Social Host and other individuals at the event are following University policies and procedures and state policies related to the safe use and/or consumption of alcohol. For events that are registered as non-alcohol events you will be responsible for ensuring that no alcohol is present at the event. Failure to follow through on your duties and responsibility as a TIPS monitor could impact your ability to serve as a TIPS monitor at future events.
At events with alcohol...
BEFORE EVENT:
- Read over the event registration form. Ask for a copy of the form if you need on and follow through on any questions you may have about the event with the Office of Student Activities and Leadership.
- Pick up the TIPS Monitor packet and ID Scanner for your event at the Student Center Information Desk.
- Re-familiarize yourself with the Alcohol Policy.
DURING THE EVENT:
- Wear your TIPS shirt.
- Check in with the Social Host and Security Officer at the beginning of an event.
- Have one or two monitors setup at the main entrance to an event (Note all events with alcohol are to be setup so there is only one entrance/exit to the event). Those monitors should ID individuals entering the event, BRACELET those who are 21 and over and CHECK ALCOHOL being brought into the event (all alcohol events must be BYOB; no alcohol can be provided by individuals hosting the event).
- Always check Driver's License with ID Scanner and have student put their bracelet on in front of you.
- All alcohol must be in sealed, single serving containers and each student is limited to the following:
- For 2-hour parties: 3 drinks
- For 4-hour parties: 6 drinks
- If a student brings more than the approved amount above, they must take any excess back to their rooms.
- Check each individual’s condition as they enter. Report any concerns to Security (x5555).
ALL MONITORS also must:
- Watch the event overall. You should do rounds to make sure everyone is ok and that no underage student (or individual without a bracelet) is drinking. Ensure no other substances are being abused. (If there are 3 or more TIPS monitors one TIPS monitor should be assigned this task throughout the event)
- Watch the entrance/exit to make sure students do not take open containers out of the event or bring in more alcohol.
- Contact Security immediately if a problem occurs at an event you are not able to control (i.e. disruptive behavior, abuse of alcohol or drugs, violation of University policy, etc.)
- Assist individuals with calling Security (x5555) for safe walks.
At the beginning of your event, you can decide amongst yourselves who will do each role or you can each take turns doing each role throughout the night. If you have any questions or problems throughout the night, don't hesitate to talk with Security (x5555).
AFTER EVENT:
- Close the event with the Security Office and notify them of any problems that occurred during the event.
- Return the TIPS Monitor packet and ID Scanner for your event at the Student Center Information Desk.
- Make sure ID Scanner is plugged back into the power adapter in Timberly’s office.
